November 18, 2009: Basque Aspen Art of the Sierra Nevada
A century and more ago sheepherders, largely Basque in origin, filled the summer hours carving images on aspen trees. Most were names and dates, but others carved animals and birds, memories from the homeland, and some carved their ideas of female companionship. Over time the aspens put the finishing touches on these images, growing and stretching the lines of the carvings, maintaining a living record of this history. Jean and Phillip I. Earl discussed their book, Basque Aspen Art of the Sierra Nevada, available from Baobab Press.
