Community Involvement:

  • HRPS is getting involved with the Mt. Rose School's Centennial Celebration in 2010, responding to a request from school volunteer Jenny Brekhus. The Board approved $250 to support her work to curate a display case in the school, which she plans to periodically change. Jenny also encouraged volunteers to help with the Celebration since the school doesn't have a PTA.
  • HRPS sent a $200 donation to the Keck Museum at the University of Nevada Reno, as thanks for the successful tour and social held there.

Financial Support for HRPS:

  • Membership: Reminder letters will go out in November to reach the 200 members who haven't renewed their memberships. A new return envelope has been developed and will be available in the future.
  • Nevada Humanities grant: HRPS submitted a funding proposal for $4,600 to cover four objectives. They are to defray research costs, to videotape monthly programs, to support costs for the 4th grade outreach and for website enhancement.

Projects and Walking Tours:

  • It was a great 2009 Walking Tour season but revenues are going down since there are so many members. The Board plans to pursue on-demand tours for conventions.
  • Literary Reno Update: the HRPS-sponsored documentary aired on Channel 5 and copies to sell have been ordered from the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs.
  • Prohibition Tour: a second tour has been scheduled for Dec. 5th, the actual date of the Repeal of Prohibition, to accommodate the overflow from the September tour.
  • Student Education Project: a flyer has been distributed to teachers in Washoe County Schools to invite them to participate in the expanding program. Hidden Valley, Swope and St. Albert's have already expressed interest.
  • Information sign or gateway for the Powning Addition: the Board has set aside money for this project and we will be pursuing the design and implementation of this during late 2009 and early 2010.
  • Website: the Board will work to add new content on the site on a regular basis. We are also investigating creating a blog in which people can contribute information about research projects and other subjects.
